Piper Aircraft Model Numbers Explained: What Do PA-18, PA-28 and PA-46 Mean?

When pilots talk about Piper aircraft, the conversation can quickly become a collection of numbers:

PA-18

PA-28

PA-32

PA-34

PA-44

PA-46


Then the numbers become even more specific:


PA-28-161

PA-28-181

PA-32-300

PA-34-220T

PA-46-500TP

For someone new to aviation, Piper’s naming system can seem unnecessarily complicated. Are the numbers based on horsepower? Seating capacity? Aircraft size? Production order?


The answer is a little more interesting.


Piper’s PA numbers are primarily aircraft design and model-family designations. They help identify the basic aircraft design, while the numbers and letters that follow usually identify a particular version, engine configuration or development within that family.

Understanding these designations can help pilots, aircraft buyers and owners recognize how different Piper models are related. It can also prevent confusion when arranging maintenance, ordering parts or obtaining aircraft insurance.

What Does “PA” Mean?


“PA” stands for Piper Aircraft.

The number immediately following PA identifies the basic Piper aircraft design or model family.

For example:


PA-18 refers to the Super Cub family.

PA-28 refers to the Cherokee-derived family that includes aircraft such as the Warrior and Archer.

PA-32 refers to the larger six-seat Cherokee Six, Lance and Saratoga family.

PA-34 refers to the Seneca family.

PA-44 refers to the Seminole family.

PA-46 refers to the Malibu and modern M-Class family.


These numbers are not normally a direct indication of horsepower, seating capacity or performance. They are better understood as engineering or project numbers assigned as Piper developed new aircraft.


The numbers generally progressed over time, but not every number became a successful production aircraft. Some design numbers were assigned to prototypes, proposed aircraft, experimental projects or designs that never entered full production.


Piper Did Not Always Use the PA System


Before the PA-numbering system became familiar, Piper aircraft used earlier designations such as the J-series.


The best-known example is the Piper J-3 Cub. Production of the J-3 ended in 1947 after nearly 20,000 had been built. Piper later introduced aircraft such as the PA-11 Cub Special and PA-18 Super Cub as the Cub family continued developing. (Piper Aircraft)

The PA-18 was not the eighteenth version of the Super Cub. It was Piper’s aircraft design designation for that particular family.


The Super Cub was essentially a strengthened development of the PA-11 that could accommodate more powerful engines. Piper introduced the PA-18 in 1949, and the aircraft eventually became one of the most recognizable utility airplanes ever produced. (National Air and Space Museum)


The First Number Identifies the Aircraft Family


The first number is generally the most important part of the designation.

Consider the PA-28 family.


Over the decades, the PA-28 designation has been applied to many aircraft with different marketing names, engines and capabilities, including:


Cherokee

Warrior

Archer

Cadet

Dakota

Pathfinder

Arrow

Although these airplanes are not identical, they share a common design lineage and certification family.


Piper introduced the PA-28 Cherokee line in the early 1960s. More than 60 years later, Piper still produces aircraft based on that basic family, including modern Archer and Pilot models. (Piper Aircraft)


That longevity is one reason the model number alone does not tell the entire story. A 1960s Cherokee and a new Piper Archer may both be PA-28 aircraft, but their equipment, engines, useful loads, values and insurance considerations can be very different.


What Does the Number After PA-28 Mean?

The second portion of the designation identifies the particular model or variant.

For example:


PA-28-140

PA-28-151

PA-28-161

PA-28-180

PA-28-181

PA-28-235


In many Piper models, the final number roughly relates to the aircraft’s horsepower class. However, it should not always be treated as an exact horsepower statement.


PA-28-140


The PA-28-140 was commonly known as the Cherokee 140. It was originally associated with a 140-horsepower configuration, although many examples were later equipped or approved with 150- or 160-horsepower engines.


PA-28-161


The PA-28-161 is commonly associated with the Warrior II and later Warrior variants.

The “161” designation distinguishes it from earlier PA-28 versions and generally reflects its place in the 160-horsepower class.


PA-28-181


The PA-28-181 is the model designation commonly associated with the Archer II, Archer III and modern Archer family.


The aircraft typically uses a 180-horsepower engine, even though the model suffix is 181 rather than 180. FAA registration records continue to identify individual Archer aircraft as PA-28-181. (registry.faa.gov)


That extra digit helps distinguish the specific certified model from earlier PA-28-180 aircraft.


Why Is an Archer a PA-28-181 Instead of a PA-28-180?


A PA-28-180 and PA-28-181 are related, but they are not simply two names for the same airplane.


The PA-28-180 designation was used for earlier 180-horsepower Cherokee models.


The PA-28-181 became a later certified version associated with the Archer line. It incorporated design and production changes that separated it from the earlier Cherokee 180.


This is an important lesson when buying a Piper: two aircraft can have similar horsepower and appearance while still having different official model designations, operating limitations, parts requirements and approved configurations.


Always rely on the aircraft’s official records, data plate, flight manual and type certificate information rather than assuming the marketing name tells the full story.

What Does the “R” Mean in PA-28R?


The letter “R” generally identifies a retractable-landing-gear version.

For example:


PA-28R-180 Arrow

PA-28R-200 Arrow

PA-28R-201 Arrow

PA-28R-201T Turbo Arrow

The Arrow is part of the broader Cherokee lineage, but the retractable landing gear creates a meaningful distinction from fixed-gear PA-28 models.


The “T” commonly indicates turbocharging.


Therefore, a PA-28R-201T can be read approximately as:


PA: Piper Aircraft28: Cherokee-derived aircraft familyR: Retractable landing gear201: Particular certified modelT: Turbocharged version


The exact meaning of every suffix should still be confirmed against the aircraft’s official documentation because naming conventions can vary across model families.


The PA-32 Family


The PA-32 family began as a larger, six-seat development of the Cherokee concept.

Common PA-32 aircraft include:


PA-32-260 Cherokee Six

PA-32-300 Cherokee Six

PA-32R-300 Lance

PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP

PA-32R-301T Turbo Saratoga


In this family, the 260 and 300 designations closely correspond to the engine’s horsepower class.


The letter “R” again indicates retractable landing gear, while “T” identifies a turbocharged model.


A fixed-gear Cherokee Six and a retractable Saratoga may both belong to the PA-32 family, but they can have very different performance, maintenance and insurance profiles.


The PA-34 Seneca


The Piper Seneca is officially part of the PA-34 family.

Examples include:


PA-34-200 Seneca I

PA-34-200T Seneca II

PA-34-220T Seneca III, IV and V

The “T” denotes turbocharging.


The Seneca is a twin-engine aircraft, but the PA-34 number itself does not mean “two engines.” It is simply the family’s Piper design number.


The later PA-34-220T versions use engines in the 220-horsepower class. However, buyers should not use the suffix alone to determine an aircraft’s exact configuration. Engines, propellers and systems can be changed through approved modifications.


The PA-44 Seminole


The PA-44 Seminole is another twin-engine Piper, but it belongs to a different design family from the Seneca.


The Seminole was designed primarily as a light twin and training aircraft. It is widely used by flight schools for multi-engine and instrument training.


Although both the Seneca and Seminole are piston twins, they are not interchangeable:

PA-34 Seneca: larger cabin, greater load-carrying capability and commonly used for personal or business transportation.


PA-44 Seminole: lighter training-oriented twin with simpler operating requirements and lower power.


The difference matters when purchasing insurance because underwriters consider the exact model, hull value, pilot experience, intended use and training requirements—not simply whether the aircraft is a “Piper twin.”


The PA-46 Family


The PA-46 family demonstrates how one Piper model number can cover aircraft with substantially different systems and performance.


The family has included aircraft marketed as:



Malibu

Mirage

Matrix

Meridian

M350

M500

M600

M700 Fury


Depending on the version, a PA-46 may have a piston engine or a turbine engine. It may be pressurized or unpressurized. Its value and performance may range dramatically.

Examples include:


PA-46-310P, MalibuPA-46-350P

Mirage and M350PA-46-500TP Meridian and M500PA-46-600TP M600PA-46-701TP M700 Fury


In these designations:


“P” is associated with pressurized piston versions.


“TP” identifies turboprop versions.


The numerical suffix often corresponds approximately to the aircraft’s power category or certified model development.


The important point is that saying “PA-46” does not provide enough information for a proper insurance quotation. The complete model, year, serial number, engine, equipment and insured value must be confirmed.



Why Are Some PA Numbers Missing?

When looking through Piper history, you may notice gaps between model numbers.

That does not necessarily mean Piper forgot to use them.


Some numbers were assigned to:


Experimental aircraft

Engineering studies

Prototypes

Military projects

Aircraft that were cancelled

Designs that were acquired or substantially revised

Projects that never reached full production


A model number could also be assigned internally without becoming well known to the public.


This means Piper’s designations should not be viewed as a perfectly continuous list of production airplanes.


They are closer to a historical record of Piper’s design and development work.


Marketing Name Versus Certified Model


One of the most important distinctions for an aircraft buyer is the difference between the marketing name and the certified model designation.


For example, “Archer” is the marketing name.

“PA-28-181” is the model designation.

“Arrow” is the marketing name.

“PA-28R-201” may be the certified model.

“Saratoga” is the marketing name.

“PA-32R-301” may be the certified model.


The marketing name is easier to remember and advertise. The certified model is what appears in technical records, maintenance documentation, registrations and insurance applications.


Transport Canada notes that aircraft type certification results in a Type Certificate Data Sheet, which is then used as part of the official aircraft identification and licensing process. (Transport Canada)


Why the Exact Model Matters for Aircraft Insurance


When requesting an aircraft insurance quote, simply saying “Piper Cherokee” may not provide enough information.


A Cherokee could refer to several aircraft with different:


Horsepower

Landing gear

Number of seats

Gross weights

Hull values

Performance characteristics

Loss histories

Pilot-training requirements

For example, insuring a fixed-gear PA-28-140 is very different from insuring a retractable PA-28R Turbo Arrow.


Likewise, a PA-32 Cherokee Six, a Lance and a Turbo Saratoga all share a related design heritage, but their insurance requirements may be very different.


An aviation insurance broker may ask for:


Complete aircraft model

Year of manufacture

Serial number

Registration

Engine and propeller information

Hull value

Avionics and modifications

Landing-gear configuration

Pilot experience

Annual flying hours

Intended use

Storage location

These details help ensure that the insurer understands the actual aircraft being covered.


Modifications Can Make the Model Number Only Part of the Story


Many older Piper aircraft have been modified throughout their lives.

Possible changes include:


Higher-horsepower engines

Different propellers

STOL kits

Wing-tip

modifications

Extended-range fuel tanks

Modern avionics

Gross-weight increases

Tailwheel conversions

Float installations

Alternative landing gear

Turbocharger systems


The aircraft may still retain its original PA model designation even though its performance, value and risk profile have changed significantly.


That is why an insurance application should include major modifications rather than relying only on the model number.


A modified aircraft may require additional information, including supplemental type certificate documentation, photographs, updated weight-and-balance records or pilot training.


Do Similar PA Numbers Mean Similar Aircraft?

Not necessarily.


A PA-28 and PA-32 share some design history, but the PA-32 is larger and generally more capable.


A PA-34 and PA-44 are both piston twins, but they serve different purposes.


A PA-18 and PA-19 are closely related Cub-type aircraft, while a PA-20 and PA-22 belong to the Pacer and Tri-Pacer lineage.


The design number shows the family, but it does not guarantee that neighbouring numbers represent nearly identical airplanes.


A Simple Way to Read Piper Model Numbers


When you see a Piper designation, break it into sections.

Consider PA-28R-201T:

PA means Piper Aircraft.

28 identifies the aircraft family.

R identifies retractable landing gear.

201 identifies the certified version.

T identifies turbocharging.

Now consider PA-46-500TP:

PA means Piper Aircraft.

46 identifies the Malibu and M-Class family.

500 identifies the particular model and power category.

TP indicates a turboprop version.

This method will not explain every Piper designation perfectly, but it provides a useful starting point.


What Aircraft Buyers Should Confirm

Before purchasing a Piper, confirm the complete model from the aircraft’s official records.



Do not rely exclusively on an advertisement saying:


“Cherokee”

“Arrow”

“Lance”

“Saratoga”

“Malibu”

Ask to review:


The aircraft data plate

Certificate of registration

Flight manual or pilot operating handbook

Journey and technical logs

Weight-and-balance report

Modification and STC records

Engine and propeller records

This will help confirm exactly what aircraft you are buying and whether it matches the seller’s description.


Final Thoughts


Piper’s model numbers may look confusing, but they become much easier to understand once you separate the aircraft family from the individual version.

The PA number identifies the broad Piper design family.


The numbers and letters that follow identify the specific model, engine class, landing-gear configuration or other development.


However, the designation is only the beginning. Aircraft of the same family can differ substantially because of age, equipment, modifications, engines and intended use.


When purchasing or insuring a Piper aircraft, always provide the complete model designation and as much supporting information as possible.


The difference between a PA-28-140, PA-28-181 and PA-28R-201T is much greater than a few numbers and letters.

It can affect performance, training, maintenance costs, aircraft value and insurance.
